Modernism was essentially based on a utopian vision of human life and society and a belief in progress, or moving forward. Modernist ideals pervaded art, architecture, literature, religious faith, philosophy, social organization, activities of daily life, and even the sciences.

Someone who is a nihilist is a believer of nihilism which literally means "nothingism." They believe in nothing, maintaining that life has no meaning and rejecting all moral and religious values as well as political and social institutions.

Nihilism is the “positive” stance that there is no such thing as right or wrong. (It is analogously similar to atheism's being the view that one does not believe in God, and not that it is impossible in this lifetime to know whether God exists or not.)
